In the US, the IIHS surveys monetary loss due to injury, crash damage, and theft, and reports them, normalized against miles driven. This result also takes into account owner demographics, so it's not a clean analysis of vehicle performance, but at least it's something. In this arena, the 9-5 and 9-3 score 1st and 2nd, respectively in their class of midsize luxury vehicles, with both grouped in the "substantially better than average (the highest)" category. In this test, the 9-5 scored 58, the 9-3 scored 69.
In Sweden, the Folksam Institute collects data to correlate injury severity against crash severity. Things are different over there, and the insurance and automobile companies can (and do) confiscate vehicles which are involved in crashes that produce serious injury or death for study. In the latest Folksam Institute report, the 9-5 scored in the top category, the 9-3 was not rated. (Note that to be rated by Folksam, there must be a data base containing a minimum number of analyzed severe injury crashes. The safer a car is or the more expensive a car is, the longer it takes to qualify. Thus, many high end cars never make it into the ratings). Folksam's ratings also include laboratory test results and equipment asessments, such as head restraint design, stability control, and the "star" rating for the European New Car Asessment Program (ENCAP).
Based on the data, I think I'd make the selection on other criteria (accomodations, price, fuel economy, driving properties, towing ability, style) and assume that the level of safety is comperable.
