My guess is that the US Department of Transportation has not approved the beam shape, or lens material, or impact resistance, or any of a multitude of possibilities. sine these are said to provide better highway illumination, I am guessing the difference is the shape of the light beam.
IF you were stopped for a Highway Safety Inspection, and IF the Officer inspected your lamp lenses, and IF the officer noted they did not have a DOT stamp molded into the glass, and IF the officer knew this was required for all cars sold in the US (even those originating in Europe), you may receive a citation to correct. Are we at 0% probability yet?
I have not installed these on my car, but would consider them against the OEM replacements if I had a broken lens and probably make my decision based upon cost.
Another interesting tidbit involves the clear tail lamps for the 9-3SC. These are very rare in the US as no cars were sold with them installed from the factory by SaabUSA when this model was introduced in 2006. SaabUSA imported these lenses from Europe (where they were a factory option) and offered them for sale in their accessory catalog. Oops! Someone within GM or SaabUSA forgot to ask the DOT if this was OK. Sales immediately stopped until the DOT had blessed these lenses, for the 2008 model year!
