Yep, they aren't kosher. I've NEVER had any trouble w/an inspection w/the ecodes on either of our cars at any station. If anything, the pattern is sharper like some of the newer legal systems, and much less irritating to oncoming traffic. Assuming you dim your high beams, which are nasty regardless of OEM or Ecode. But I was sold on ecode's back in the 70's when I looked at comparisons of beam patterns. Before DOT let the stylists do what they wanted, and you had your choice of round systems, the ecode's were much better. The non standard stylist lenses led to an amazing number of vehicles here in the states that are horrible at night.
I kept my old oem lenses, in case I ever really had to switch them, but don't think it will ever happen.
FWIW, my insurance company covered the glass lenses for the opaque sandblasted ones my wife's car had under glass coverage. I didn't have that problem on the saab, and just paid up!
