Saab recommends premium to get the advertised fuel economy and performance ratings, but is one of the only cars that has the ability to "tell" what kind of gas it's burning and adjust engine performance to prevent damage to the engine, like pinging and knocking. People may say you're going to build up soot and carbon deposits and crap like that using lower octane gas but it's not true. you'll just notice a little less power under your right foot and maybe a slight drop in MPG.
