I've read mixed opinions about this, on here and other sites. It seems that everyone's experience differs. I live in Denver and my 2001 2.3 pings like crazy on regular, and I'm not an aggressive driver. Our regular is 85, mid grade is 87 and premium is 91 (for the most part).
I did the math, and for no more than I drive (under 8,000 miles a year), it's costing me around an extra $100 per year to just use premium. My manual says to run premium, and in my opinion, for the extra $100, it makes no sense to risk damaging the engine over $100. If I drove 40,000 miles per year, I might be humming a different tune.
