It is a little bit tricky to get up there and get the Torx bolt (T30) out that holds the CKP sensor but many have done it.
Some say they can reach it from above but seems too difficult for me.
Because of the turbo plumbing and the oil return pipe from turbo it is limited space but if your indy is into Volvo's he already knows all about that with the turbo oil return seals on the "white" engine Volvo's.
Can't say if the hesitation and stumble is related but it is always important not to try to fix several problems with one repair, but to fault trace and determine a repair for each problem.
My gut feeling is that your mechanic is more into the shoot from the hip approach replacing parts until the problem is found.
Sometimes this is faster than doing the long term testing and fault tracing but you can also shoot yourself in the foot badly when guessing wrong parts.
When suspecting a bad CKP sensor I bring the engine up as hot as possible leaving it outside in the sun idling. Than I turn it off and let it sit for about 10-15 min for a heat soak of sensor and then take a reading of pin 1-2 of CKP sensor.
If the resistance is way over 1000 Ohm, the sensor is most likely bad.
