The theory is that the CKP gets hot and becomes inconsistent in its signalling. The rest of the system sees this as a loss of tach signal and makes attempts to deal with it. In my case the car was a slug off the line like you had the transmission in winter mode or "3".
I could imagine a number of variations on the theme. I have been reading about heat related performance issues a lot on here and the other SAAB centric site.
