I really need some help. I have a 1999 LPT Wagon, manual trans, abouut 53,000 miles.
I have in the last couple of months developed what was first a bad hesitation that seemed to come after 3-4 miles in traffic on my commute, almost predicatable within a couple of blocks, and then no other symptom. Then, I had a couple of instances of it not starting after it had been driven. It managed to do this at my indie after an oil change, and he pronounced it the DIC (which had been replaced at 39K). It was not the DIC, in fact problem got substantially worse as it now stalled out in traffic, including several instances of it having an incredibly hard time restarting. He now diagnosed the fuel pump (seemed likely) and even took the DIC back (we ahve a good relationship over the years).
That was Wednesday. Didn't really get it out again until today, and it was the same predictable behavior, much worse coming out of town this afternoon. I've noticed the problem is much worse in the afternoon. There is also a horrible sulfur smell after I finally get it restarted. Driving in traffic while watching the tach is not a solution.
Check Engine light has never come on.
Throttle/throttle body?
I see how to clean the throttle plate, but am hesitant to try this myself since this is the 4 cylinder and it's vertical--what do I do about the drippings?
Anybody--where do I look next?
Thanks in advance.
