9-5s are all pretty reliable, the later the better. After 2002 they got better. My 03 Aero with 70K on it has been very reliable. I like the looks of the 04 and 05 and you should be able to get a good deal on one.
Key things to check are the history of oil changes and whether the PCV #6 upgrade has been done. This may have been the standard PCV on 05s, not sure.
If the car has more than 60K on it replace the serpentine belt. The problems with the direct ignition cassette were largely solved by those years, although I still have the original in mine with no trouble.
These are great cars. Yes, they are now an old design and there are cars with more gimmicks and gee-gaws. But these are comfortable, fast cars, great highway cars that get good milage, wonderful seats, roomy and I think very beautiful looking. There's nothing like that Aero rush in 3rd gear when you stomp it and that torque just rolls out....
You can buy one of these with confidence as long as it checks out with frequent oil changes and no engine sludge.
