What model year and how much are you planning to spend on it (big diff between 100K and 180k miles too)? My general advice would be to buy "less" of a car, save some money, and use it to fund the inevitable repair or parts if you are a DIYer. I'd also suggest you drive a 2001 or 2002 9-3 for comparison. Cheaper to buy, and likely cheaper to maintain.
That said, I have an Aero, and it doesn't require more in upkeep than a base model 9-5 unless you start looking at a more costly occasional Aero specific part.
