Let's put something in perspective. A 9-5 Aero is a complex, high-performance MSRP $40K+ car new. A 100K mile used one is a complex, high-performance car with a good bit of wear-and-tear with probably no warranty. While I think the long-term running costs of a 9-5 can be very reasonable IF you can either do your own work and/or have a talented and reasonably-priced mechanic. I think that unless you can realistically afford the maintenance and repair costs you should not even begin to consider buying one. And I know that FOR SURE, when I was in college 15+ years ago, I could barely keep an 84 Jetta GLI on the road, never mind a complex near-luxury car.
Also no surprise that you have things breaking regularly on an SPG - the newest one on the planet is what - 17 - years old now? Entropy always wins....
