OBD code P0116, was a sticking-open thermostat.. Posted by TonyJ [Email] (#407) [Profile/Gallery] (more from TonyJ) on Sat, 29 Nov 2008 16:25:57 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The engine fault indicator came on and my surprisingly-observant wife also noticed that the temperature gauge was reading low and heat output was diminished. I searched this site and found ~30 hits on P0116, many recommending replacement of both the thermostat and temp sensor, so ordered them both from eeuro, plus other little stuff to reach the free-shipping threshold.
I decided to change the thermostat first because the sensor would not be reducing heat output. The hardest part was draining the coolant. There is a nice green finger grip drain knob at the left bottom of the radiator, but too much stuff in the way to grab it. I ended up using the tool made for the 9000 (see TonyJ gallery- Saab Tools You can Make (Shop)), with an extension. Anyone know another way to get at it?
The drain comes within 2" of the edge of the plastic splash cover, so I drilled a hole and added a short drain hose to make it easier next time.
New (Wahler) and old (MotoRad) thermostats both behaved perfectly in a pan of boiling water, but the old one has scrape marks. Never had a bad thermostat in any 9000.
