It is a little bit more difficult to replace the temp sensor by its own so I would absolutely replace them together since both are known to fail.
Using a 1/4" socket with a slot cut trough (made my own for the 9000s) and a long 1/4" extension makes it very easy to reach in through the frame work from under and open the drain cock.
I always spray some WD40 first to make it slide/rotate easier.
Yes, the thermostats has gone downhill in quality but it is also due that today's cars keeps track of it. The 9000 and old 900 was to "dumb" to know if the thermostat opened too quickly or stayed open all the time. Only when they locked up shut did you have a problem.
