1. Four all-season tires are superior to four summer tires.
2. Four snow tires are superior to four all-season tires.
3. On an all-wheel-drive car (Subaru, Audi, etc.), four all-season tires are superior to four snow tires on a front-wheel-drive car.
4. On an all-wheel-drive car, four snow tires is the strongest combination available for a car. After that, I would guess that tracked equipment would have an edge.
The independent tests I reviewed emphasized that all-season tires are not snow tires. If you have to drive in snow, snow tires are really the only effective solution. Adding to this expense, snow tires lose their effectiveness rapidly when remaining tread drops below 5-6/32nds.
