Anyone who takes the time to post here, I am sure is an experienced winter driver--especially with Saabs. I own two Saabs and think that they are great (bordering on amazing) in the snow.
That being said, How can an all-wheel-drive car with the same snow tires not be better? Before I owned the Saabs, I had a VW Quantum Synchro. This car was better than the Saabs in the snow. It was lighter and not as well built, but without a doubt it was better with snow driving.
If I had to put a less experienced driver in either car I would choose the Saab as the driving characteristics are more consistent, and as someone above mentioned, an AWD car can really screw you if you are not used to it. If push came to shove though, and I HAD to get somewhere I would choose the AWD to have all of my options.
For me, the balance of good winter traction, a well built car, and better gas mileage pulls me into the Saab. Plus, has anyone ever had to maintain a VW Quantum. Holy Cow!
Just having a fun discussion, Mike
