I bought my 9-5 used with no protection plan or CPO. I saved about $2500 over a CPO'd car. 4 years later I've done very little to it. Biggest expense was a fuel pump (DIY), CPS (DIY), DIC (DIY, saab gave me my money back for the part), brakes, 60K service, and that's about it.
I've got 92K on the car. When it comes out again in the spring it will have the 90K service done. I don't expect anything crazy with that service either, and I don't think any protection plan covers wear and tear items or sched. maint. That said, save your $1500 and hope for the best. I think I've got $600 into mine plus the wear items and maint.
