Good points, Mike.
AWD is confidence inspiring because they go great in lousy conditions, but that confidence--as we've all seen--often leads to getting towed out of a ditch or off the median. AWD is also great for starting from standing stop on a slick surface, even ice. You gotta have good boots on the car in winter, but knowing how to drive in snow makes a huge difference, too. AWD helps make up for a shortage of driver skill, but I think I see more AWD cars stuck than FWD cars.
Under the vast majority of winter driving conditions four good snows on a good FWD car do the job just fine. I remember my wife leading the snowplow up our steep, unplowed hill, driving our C900 back about 1986 in about 6" of fresh wet snow. And driving my 9000 on 200 miles of marginally plowed roads in the Berkshires in blizzards with no worries.
