My 99 Silverado has the dreaded "piston slap". I let it run for two or three minutes(summer and winter) and it's more quiet and smooth than my Saab could ever be. Over 160,000 miles and the thing still runs perfect and doesn't drip a drop of anything. I installed a remote starter on that about four years ago. However, I don't let either vehicle idle for more than a few minutes or so. I also installed an oil pressure gauge on my Saab and the psi's drop quite a bit in those few minutes so the oil warms pretty quickly while idling(Mobil 1-0w40). I've always "warmed up" all of my vehicles(7 to date) and have never had one single engine problem whatsoever. Of course, to each his/her own. Btw, the block heater sounds like a great idea.
