Idling a cold engine is not good although its less damaging that it was back in the days of carburetors. Before computer controlled fuel injection the rich mixture used to keep a cold engine idling would dilute the oil on the cylinder walls causing excess wear. This still happens to some extent and it is better to drive off slowly as soon as the engine starts. When the engine is made to perform work (cf. Carnot cycle) it warms up much faster.
