I recently picked up an '08 Aero to replace the '02 Aero I totaled in October. The '02 was purchased new and met its fate with 142,000+ miles showing. The only problem that sidelined me before the accident was a common one - the coolant bypass valve broke at 84,000 miles.
I agree with Mike Lynch - these cars are very reliable. In my case I owned an '84 Mazda that did not hold a candle to the Saab, and a '99 Lexus that the Saab replaced that was slightly more trouble prone than the Saab.
The only point I would make is that Saabs, like most european cars, require regular and competent service. I've always maintained my cars very well, and at least in the case of the '02 Aero, I was well rewarded for it.
Bottom line - a 9-5, given proper care, will not disappoint. If it does, it's a fluke, and statistically I would bet no more common than a lemon from another make.
