There's not really a model or a year to avoid. Even the first year 1999's can be darn decent. Aero, Arc, V6 or 2.3LPT/Linear are all swell.
How new and how much? If you have to go older and higher miles you get a nicer interior. Cool SportWagons and Aeros from 2000 and up.
2002 was the mid-cycle enhancement with the 5 speed auto and mild reshape of the front and rear facias. Also from 2002 and up were new 9-5 toys like xenons, park assist and rain sensing wipers, and the killer sport seats in the Aeros. Wasn't 2004 the first nav year?
2006 was another MCE with still a new look and everything came with the 260hp Aero motor.
V6's from 99-2003 are well liked and don't succumb to any of the previous V6 bugaboos from the 900 or 9000 experience. The V6 in the 9-5 is bullet proof.
