I have tried the video scope on some of the engines and you can see pretty well inside but it is a tricky job to get the probe to move where you want it to.
What you still cannot see is the pickup screen since the clearance between pan and screen is to tight. For that you have to remove the pan and pickup.
The coat hanger trick is still quicker and will show if an engine is badly sludged up.
The sludge issue seems to have subsided quite a bit since we don't see or hear as much about it anymore.
It may be that when the cars got out of the claws of the dealer and started to get oil changes at a more normal mileage level and that full synthetic is used instead of that semi synthetic used at the time, the problem has lessened.
