I agree that a normal coat hanger won't detect some levels of sludge so I created a special version for SAABs. I bought a cheap bbq grill spatula and cut it down to about 1/2 inch width. Then I bent up the very end about 1/8th inch so that it makes contact with the screen. It has to be just the right size to fit under the oil pickup.
The level of black crud in my old 900 was enough that it was easy to see. I drained the oil and let the sump sit in pure solvent flush for a day before removing the pan. When I looked underneath the pickup there was a mound of sludge that had dropped off the screen.
