Extremely twitchy handling on icey roads Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 19 Feb 2009 14:00:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This morning was the second long drive of the winter when the roads were coated with a layer of ice. Both times my car has been so twitchy that keeping it pointed in a straight line is akin to balancing a broom on its end in the palm of my hand. Not fun on a 50+ mile commute!
Realize I have fairly new Dunlop WinterSports on 15-inch steelies as dedicated winter tires. Other cars are blowing by me on the expressway on their lousy All Season tires while exhibiting none of the problems I have. Dry roads are fine, snowy roads are fine, icey roads are frightening!
The possible cause suddenly occurred to me later in the day. I bought my 15-inch wheels from TireRack in the fall of 2001. Last spring I hit one of Michigan's magnificent potholes and bent one of these rims. I immediately ordered another from TireRack assuming it was identical. What if it isn't?
Is it possible the off-set dimension changed on the wheels they sell during the 6-1/2 year time difference? Is it this difference in off-set that is causing me such a problem on icey roads? Wheel in question is now on the rear of the car. I did not notice any problem with handling when the new wheel was on the front.
The original steel wheel was straightened, by sledge hammer I believe, when I had the tire moved to the new rim and now sits in my storage building. I am considering having the tire re-mounted onto the old rim. Any thoughts? Thanks.
