I think he's talking about Valve STEM SEALS Posted by B Millar [Email] (#1109) [Profile/Gallery] (more from B Millar) on Mon, 9 Mar 2009 11:47:34 In Reply to: Re: Car woes, Fire your trusted Mechanic!!!, bobSAABji, Mon, 9 Mar 2009 10:57:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If he was losing that much oil through the valve cover gaskets he would know about it... Stem seals are cheap but very time consuming to replace (your mechanic's estimate sounds about right) and on a car with 106,000 miles on it they are not worth replacing. He's right, just keep driving and watching the oil. But... I don't believe those are your problem. They may be leaking, and may contribute to consumption, but my V6 with 183k miles on it never consumed that much oil except when the turbo failed. Have you ever replaced your turbo? At 106k it's most likely leaking oil into the intake and/or exhaust, hence your blue smoke on startup. Also, with that mileage, your PCV hoses, valve, and nipples are probably plugged up if you've never done anything to them. These will not allow your turbo to drain oil properly, and it will leak. I found the nipple on the oil separator (back of the engine on the driver side) plugged up so I cleared that out with a pipe cleaner, replaced all my deteriorating hoses, and the valve. Another thing I would check if I were you is how much oil is in the intake boot right before the throttle body. Any Saab with a turbo is going to have a coating of oil, but if you have puddles, and can actually some out of there, you have turbo and/or PCV issues. Valve stem seals will not lead to oil collecting there. Ask more questions if you need help, please don't hesitate. I have been through a lot of oil-related stuff with my old 9-5 V6 and I learned a lot from these boards and my indy.
