I bought this 2003 9-5 2.3 July of 07' from Carter Saab in Seattle, which have since discontinued selling Saab. The 9-5 still looks almost new. Bought it with 31,000 on it and had about 45,000 when it was loaded on the tow truck. Just put new $600 tires on it when this turbo decided to ruin my day. Still paying off the 9-5.
I was picking up family at the airport and on the way home saw the puff of white smoke which was spewing out sporadically as I was driving around 60mph. About a mile later the "engine" light came on, not the "oil". The Engine started to shutter. Pulled over about 1 to 2 miles later at a gas station. I went to check the oil and when I took the cap off there was white vapor or smoke coming out of the head. It didn't really smell strong or of burnt oil though. The oil level was in the middle of min and max and had the color of week coffee.
Called AAA and had it towed, I went with the tow truck to Carter and had a cab drive my relatives home.
After Carter did the diagnostic, the rep said the Turbo had failed/broke. Also the throttle body was not setting as a result of the failure and needed to be repaired/replaced as well. They also found metal flakes on the dip stick (though when I check earlier, I didn't notice any) and at bottom of oil pan, and recommended that I have them do more exploration of the crank case for an additional $520 to see if the flakes had caused damage.
They quoted $3400 for the replacement and installation of the turbo and throttle body. This quote included parts and the additional $520 exploratory diagnostic of the crank case.
Gotta vent a little...
My previous car was a used 97 BMW 528i which I owned for 6 years and never had one problem with it. Sold it because my wife and I wanted a more fuel economic car with a better safety features.
I guess that's why Saab's have the best safety ratings, it's hard to get in an accident if your cars in the shop being repaired. In hindsight, 20/20 of the 9-5 = mistake.
At this point I'm looking into having it towed to another shop and getting a second job.
