Shark Fin / Onstar Antenna: How to remove?

Mine looks like heck (like all of them)and I have no leakage problems.
Being a ham operator, I'm wondering if anyone here has ever removed the "shark fin" and re-purposed the location. My two main questions are:
Can the existing antenna be removed without going up from inside the car (i.e., tearing out the headliner)? How?
Where does the coax end up at the Onstar end of things?
I don't want to try and remove this if it's not feasible or if breaking it means I have to buy a fake one for 70 bucks to seal up my blunder. It looks crappy now but is watertight.
If it's fed with 50-ohm cable, and I can get to the end, I could feed it to my VHF/UHF transceiver and mount a ham antenna on the roof.
Thanks,
Steve
