We haul two 12' kayaks on our Sportwagon from Maryland to Vermont and also around Maryland and Virginia. When we haul the boats we tie the rear of the kayaks to below the rear bumper. But since there is no place to tie the kayaks below the front bumper we tie the fronts back to the front of the roof rails. If you only go a few miles at slow speeds then you probably won't need to tie the front, rear or both. But if you drive at highway speeds or go more than a few miles make sure to tie at least one end and preferably both. Make sure to leave some slack in the front and rear lines.
You need to tie down the front or rear so the boat won't leave the car in an accident or if you stop very quickly. I'm also told that some states have laws that require a tiedown on the front or rear.
