My advice is simple: ALWAYS tie the front and rear of the hull down, just in case. Put some padding on the car to protect the paint where the rope contacts the car.
Reason for said advice: just last week we tied our 14' sea kayaks on to our Thule rack, the tie-down was bomber and we couldn't feel any movement front/back or side/side when we left. We got about 5 miles going 65 mph and a tiny gust of wind pulled the front Thule rack right out of the roof pins (that connect it to the roof). Luckily the back rack stayed put, and the kayaks slid of our car and onto the median before we could slow down to a stop. We (and they) came really close to hurting somebody. As is, we have a damaged roof rack, a damaged kayak, and damaged egos to boot as we had to clean up said mess on the side of a busy highway (which also could have led to injury).
Moral of the story: All racks depend on the pins that hold them onto the car. Sometimes the torsion created by speed or a wind gust is enough to pull the pins out. If the kayaks would have been tied down to the car at the front/back, the lever action would not have been able to pull the rack off. Let's just say it's a worthy 5 minutes of extra work to avoid said situation.
