replaced thermostat...more problems (long)

2000 2.3t (LPT), 131K miles
Finally got around to replacing my thermostat so I'll have heat next winter. Topped off the reservoir tonight...car wouldn't start, lots of lights came on, and a buzzing noise was coming from the dash. I am getting the red triangle, TCS off, and ABS lights; can't read the SID because it's almost completely dead. The radiator fan came on even though I never got the car started. The CEL came on and went off intermittently, and my cheap OBD scanner wouldn't even read anything, let alone an "everything's OK" code.
The one time I was finally able to get the car to start (the lights and buzzing went away), it died after about 30 seconds.
From what I've read here, it looks like my CPS and my ABS module (maybe) are at fault. Is it just dumb luck that this happens while I'm changing the t-stat? I sent my throttle body out for a rebuild this spring, it doesn't look like it tripped into limp-home, and I haven't had any problems since other than the occasional hard-start- I've had the CPS sensor on my list of things to expect- but I haven't had a stall in the 3k miles that I've owned it.
Should I go ahead and replace the CPS so I can drive it to the shop and get a diagnostic on the ABS system? Or look at something else first?
Thanks
*On a maybe related note, while working on the t-stat, I noticed that the part that e-europarts calls "intake air temp sensor" (part #6 on the "turbocharger system diagram") is somewhat "loose"- is this normal?
