I recently had my alarm rebuilt by Auto&Truck Electronics in Tennessee. Received excellent service. A quick turn around, in a matter of days, and what appears to be a quality rebuild.
Do a search on Ebay for "saab theft alarm" and a number of vendors provide the service. You might check out the following item number: 120406802401
Removing the alarm is fairly simple but does involve jacking the car and removing the left front wheel. Took me about an hour removing the unit and about 45 min upon reinstallation.
Some expense to ship the unit to the folks but the price includes return shipping. Obviously I had my unit rebuilt and did not need to "worry" about the core swap issue. No problem running with the alarm removed, one just get the STA msg. each time you start.
Seems like a great value to me. I would guess, other than the involvement of your labor, a much less expensive option to "Solve" the problem, as opposed to the cost you'll incur from your dealer or indy having the SID message disabled.
Another thought, relative to your question, is that apparently the alarm failure is not specifically the result of the battery going, but the failure of one or more of the capacitors on the circuit board. My impression is that the rebuild replaces those capacitors.
Best of Luck.
