You did a great job researching! When my batteries die I will remove the siren altogether and have it programmed not to display the service message, and to honk the horn for the alarm. I would make it silent for locking/unlocking the doors and opening the trunk. I test drove a later model '04 for an afternoon (GM deleted the siren about halfway through MY04) and I did not miss the chirps one bit. The loud thunk of the locks and lights flashing easily confirmed the car had responded to the remote.
Unfortunately the siren module in 2001 is a sealed unit unlike the earlier models where you can just unscrew it and the two halves open up. Yours would need to be dremeled or sawed open to get to the batteries, and the low success rate of battery replacements has me convinced that I will not bother with that when my time comes.
A replacement with a valid warranty would work, but that's probably $$$. Good luck!
