I'd say the 9-5 is more reliable than a "newer Cross Country." Volvo's AWD system scares the crap out of me... Do you have a specific 2002 9-5 picked out? Which engine are you looking at? There's a 2.3t Light Pressure Turbo (LPT Linear), 2.3t High Output Turbo (HOT Aero), or the 3.0t V6 (Arc).
If you go with either of the 4-cyls, you need to have the oil pan dropped and checked for sludge before buying it. Period. You also need to be sure the PCV system has been updated. This helps to prevent sludge from forming.
If you have your heart set on the V6 (great engine, by the way), make sure the timing belt and tensioners/pulleys were replaced at the last 60k mile interval, or you're going to be in for a big repair bill (engine replacement) when that belt shreds.
Regardless of engine variant, if it's an automatic check the transmission fluid and even if it looks halfway decent I would change it. Mine started slipping at 30k miles and a fluid change cleared that right up.
If all these ducks are in a row you will have an amazing car that will last for a long time and you can laugh at your friends who told you to run in the other direction. :)
I have had a 2001 9-5 V6 and now a 2004 9-5 Aero. The V6 was an amazing cruiser. It was so smooth and the engine had more than enough power. The Aero's four cylinder is a bit rough/unrefined feeling and sounding, but it puts so much power under your right foot that you'll forget all about that. The Aero suspension is HARD, but livable, and gives you pretty good handling. Good luck and let us know what you end up with please!
