I just posted something similar on my thread that I started a few days ago due to the well know low coolant warning (coolant bypass valve failure).
There are a lot of reasons why a Saab is the right car for a lot of people.
I bought mine because I was looking for a fun to drive sedan that could fit my family. I'm a mechanical engineer by education and am fairly handy (it takes me twice what you guys seem to take but I usually finish my DIY fixes).
Having said that, I've gone through a stuck thermostat, failed steering knuckle, SID replacement (and resulting catalyst replacement), failed headlight relay, failed crankshaft position sensor, and failed coolant bypass valve since I purchased my CPO 9-5.
These are all well known issues/problems. We have a lot of members who don't mind doing these "maintenance" fixes. Your Saab experience and satisfaction will be determined by your outlook as you deal with these issues. I believe you will experience at least a few of these issues during your ownership.
Initially, I enjoyed doing these DIY projects. But I have family obligations and would rather spend my weekends playing with my kids then wrenching away on the Saab.
My wife now shies away from driving the Saab because she's had a few dead on the road encounters with the Saab (SID, CPS).
I still like what the 9-5 provides but am getting fed up with the continuing issues. If I didn't fix these myself, the mechanics fees would be pretty draining on the wallet.
Having a bulletin board like Saabnet was a HUGE help, otherwise I probably would have already sold the 9-5. As it is, we will probably trade in the Saab when we purchase our next car.
