The Japanese car just don't even come close to a Saab in terms of the driving/handling/seat comfort standpoint. And lets not even get into the safety differential issue (I don't know of a Japanese car that is subject to Moose collision testing like the Saabs). The other consideration is that at this point all of the "weak points" of the 9-5 are very well known and there is an abundance of DIY write-ups floating around the internet. The majority of these "weak points" are, with the assistance of the DIY write-ups, well within the capability of the average (and maybe even below average) do-it-yourselfer.
So, if I can source the repair parts for less money than at the dealers (thank you BBA Remanufacturing, et. al.), and do most of the work myself, the Saab versus Japanese car decision is clearly a no-brainer........go with the car that is more fun to drive!
