... or compatible fluid.
ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) isn't like motor oil. You're not going to gain anything by going to a "higher performance" ATF, if that ATF does not meet the specs the manufacturer set forth.
Lubrication is only a small part of what an ATF does. The ATF has to transfer the torque of the motor to the input of the trans (via the torque converter), it has to operate the hydraulics inside the trans that control the clutches and bands, some of which may be constantly bathed in ATF (in certain transmissions - I can't say for sure in any 9-5 trans if this is true).
The wrong fluid may overheat faster, may make the clutches slip, may make the hydraulics fail, any number of things. Considering that you risk a very expensive repair by using the wrong stuff, I would not think it was worth it.
Now, a "high performance" Dexron III is another story. If it meets the DexIII spec, then it shouldn't damage your transmission. But going to a different spec fluid because someone says it "performs better" is a very dangerous and potentially expensive choice.
