Sound advice, both of you. Again, I stand corrected: the car is bone stock, 2001 9-5 SE spec; i.e., 4-spd, 3.0t, etc.
I read too many forums and listen to too many know-it-alls, which results in more confusion. Here's a bit of advice: don't listen to a Ford mechanic tell you how to maintain Saabs.
I was unaware of a high-performance Dexron III fluid on the market. There are mineral-based (petroleum) and synthetic AT fluids out there, but I'm unsure buying a synthetic fluid would be a worthy investment, given the price point.
As for shifting, again, this goes back to listening to mechanics who don't work on Saabs (or any European cars for that matter). The trans has no trouble shifting smoothly, makes no clunking or shuddering noises, and shifts quickly (though less quickly than when I bought it; it's been about 50K since the last trans fluid change).
Thanks to all who responded! I have no intention of damaging the trans by using the incorrect fluid.
