SAAB as a viable niche car player? Posted by NJ-PA Don [Email] (#1221) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NJ-PA Don) on Tue, 1 Dec 2009 11:33:36 In Reply to: Amen, sadly....., MikeN, Tue, 1 Dec 2009 10:26:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In the old days (I had many of those same fun-to-drive cars) it seems that manufacturers could survive in niches. It is interesting that with a larger and more segmented market that the small players are in difficulty.
Perhaps it is because the bigger players have taken over the niches. An example from another poster is buying a Buick to replace a SAAB - that is a major change - and I would look there too.
GM and Ford purchases of Volvo and SAAB had a fatal trap - integration to take advantage of volume meant homogenization and the niche buyers went elsewhere. At least integration the way that they did it. Porsche and VW seem to be able to pull it off.
The volumes tell the story quite dramatically - SAAB has a big hill to climb to catch Audi, BMW, or even Volvo. Let's hope for the best out of this mess.
