Adam is bang on. Most manufacturers design to pass the test to get a star rating to sell cars. Swedes design cars to be safe period. The IIHS SUV side impact test that all those manufacturers failed+avoided when it came out was passed by the 9-3ss first time (first double best pick) + yet the car was designed + out before IIHS started testing that. Not surprising since the test was based on testing SAAB did 10 years prior crashing Landrovers into 9000's (and 9-5 B pillar was the result)... How many cars go through moose testing? Another thing I noticed is SAAB does a fair bit of sequential testing - ie do a front impact, then a rollover on the same car. Anyone who's ever done reliability testing knows sequential testing is much harder to pass!
That said, over the past 10 years of GM rule, the SAAB advancements have been less impressive, and other manufacturers have substantially caught up. Not completely, but enough that it is not as obvious as 10 or 20 years ago, and so some will say "they're all just as safe"... sure, they're all better than they were... but not quite "just as safe"...
9-5 is brilliant + an outstanding deal. if they can manage servicing a potentially orphan car, imho they should look at a 2004+ 9-5 Arc.
