Thanks for the headsup. Somehow I never thought of asking the dealership what oil they provided ever since they offered to use "semi-synthetic" on my car as per manufacturer spec when the car was new. I have been bringing my own fully synthetic oil for the entire almost 9 years. I should ask again now that the factory spec is fully synthetic.
"Blow by" refers to the hot combustion gas / flame front in the cylinder getting past the rings on the pistons and getting into the crank case. Engine oil has a functional purpose in sealing that microscopic gap, so that the rest of the oil in the crank case is not diluted or cauterized by the hot gas/liquid coming from the cylinder. Since multi-weight engine oils take time to heat up and thicken, I'd have to guess blow-by is especially severe when the engine is cold.
