... I would not buy any 1999-2003 9-5 2.3t without having the oil pan dropped. In the four years I have been hanging around Saab forums I've heard quite a few sludge stories. There really is no rhyme or reason to which engines get sludge. Sure, by not changing the oil on time or not upgrading to PCV 6, you're probably more at risk. Enough people who are 100% on top of oil changes and PCV updates have still experienced catastrophic sludge failure that I wouldn't assume an engine isn't sludged up just by looking at it's excellent maintenance records. If you find a 9-5 you like take it somewhere and spend the $200 to have it thoroughly checked out. It might save you from big headaches down the road. Good luck!
