New TTID 1.9L seems excellent. Recently released is the new TTID in the 9-3, not for the US market however. Putting out 180hp and 295 ft lbs for a small 1.9L is excellent! Mate that to a nice shifting 6 speed manual and im sure it would get mid 40s MPG cruising on the highway at a reasonable speed.
While recently in Sweden, I was able to get a first hand look at the new TTID technology and have to say it is quite impressive. The exhaust is driven though the smaller turbo from idle to 1500rpm and progressively transfers over to the larger turbo up until 3000rpm when the larger secondary takes over fully. The size of the smaller turbine is absolutely tiny. The full size is just slightly over the size of a US quarter, maybe about the size of a half dollar.
The benefits to diesel are great, excellent fuel mileage, little to no service within the engine (spark plugs). I stopped at ANA Saab in Trollhattan and talked to the a service tech there about the Saab diesels and was told there are ZERO problems with them. Much less troublesome than the gasoline variants offered. There seems to be a slow penetration of diesels being offered on luxury cars such as BWM and Audi. Hopefully the market here in the US will see the benefits. Gone are the days of black sooty exhaust and loud rattling at idle. They do not have the same HP output as petrols, but the advantage of torque makes them a dream to drive.
I have a '06 6.6L Duramax diesel work truck and it is very very refined. while driving, it is on par with my '01 Aero Wagon on interior noise and I have never had any problems starting in the dead cold. Another excellent advantage is the use of biodiesel. My dad has a '02 7.3L powerstroke and mom a '02 Chevy 3500 Duramax who both run 100% biodiesel with zero problems. It is cheaper than diesel at the pump, and offers excellent lubrication to the fuel system regular diesel does not offer.
I say YES to diesel. (And its about time!!)
