I've owned several old-school Peugeot diesels and a modern '02 VW TDI. No complaints on the heat output of either sort. The VW had electric heating elements in the coolant to speed heating in extreme cold, and it worked. The VW also had MUCH faster glow plug heating, I think at 5F it took <10 seconds for the glow plug light to shut off, and no wait at 32F. In Maine, heated seats are a MUST regardless of power type! :-)
I also never had an issue with fuel geling - but I always used a bit of anti-gel additive in the winter to be safe. I did have one of my Pugs not start on a -10F morning on a trip to Watertown NY, but plugging in the block heater for 20 minutes sorted it out. The TDI started right up in similar conditions.
When I bought my 9-3 SC last year, I seriously considered another VW TDI. But with the discounts being given, the VW would have been several thousand dollars more expensive, and I just don't drive that much anymore. And when I am doing a roadtrip, I am usually getting paid $.535/mile to do it. But if I could have spent a couple thousand more and had my 9-3 in a TiD, I would have in a heartbeat.
