VW's have had issues with engine oil specs that limited on to purchasing oil only at the dealer. If injectors are driven via cam shaft lobes, this puts very high demands on the engine oil properies. Diesels consume a lot of oil, oil that can be very expensive. You cannot go from oil change to oil change without topping up the oil. Topping up the oil can be something that is done quite often. With very high compression ratios, there is a lot of blow by gas that carries an oil mist through the PCV into the intake where it mixes with EGR gases. The sooty oil combines with the soot in the EGR gas and creates very large amounts of deposits, that can be goo on top with deeper layers becoming very hard and difficult to chisel out.
Diesel fuel is not a cheap fuel anymore and as the economy increases demand, the cost of this fuel can go up considerably.
The timing belt drives the injection pump: the service life of the timing belt can be quite short and a costly replacement, hours, gaskets, seals, idler bearings, slack adjusters. Exhaust manifolds foul up. Water cooled EGR gear foul up. The glow plugs have a finite lifetime. I owned a VW diesel and its not a low maintenance technology. These costs and the higher first costs really eat away at the percieved benefit of higher MPGs.
When filling up with fuel, the fuel is very prone to foaming. Getting fuel into the tank can take a lot more time than you would expect.
Cold weather can require anti-gel additives. But this is typically not an issue as there are seasonal changes to diesel fuel just as with gasoline. Water in diesel fuel is a serious concern, it cannot disperse as it can with alcohols in gasoline.
If these problems can be reduced.....
