Audi is one of the easiest Cars I have found to work on, well actually the easiest is the 94-99 jetta 2.0 but I love the A6 when it comes to DIY. they look complicated but in 20minutes or less you can put the front end into service position (the whole front bumper, core support, radiator etc) swings out of the way exposing the engine! I will buy any v6 Audi I can find with a busted T-Belt, Dealers give some unreal cost to repair and I can do it in 8hrs and for about $500-700, including replace valves.
the Vag-com is software by RossTech, it is basically the same program the dealer uses. VW and Audi is the Only MFG who will allow the customer to have the ability to truly work on their car!! I can do anything the dealer can do, the cost of Vag-com is about $300. on some A4's I can boost turbo, and adjust shifting points, reset airbags, and anything else. word gets around I have the Vag and occasionally I get calls from strangers to pull codes etc. Don't get me wrong, I do still like Saab but as the "good" cars get older (97-2004) and the newer cars become more complex and "dealer" dependent I get more and more fond of the Audi/Vw
Audi does have a overly sensitive emissions circuit though any little thing will set off the Ch engine light, most commonly Vac leaks, but if you change vac lines as normal maintenance it isn't a issue
