9-5. 99 lpt. 150,000 miles.

Has had check engine light (CEL) pop up for years now and nothing I or the dealer or my indie can do to permanently get rid of it. Most common code now (only code for about a month or so) is 0442 - small evap leak. Have replaced entire evap system about a year ago.

Three (3)noticeable symptoms.

1. Rough idle. Bounces around from 700 to 1000 rpms when under load in gear and with AC on. Addition of Friktiontek has really calmed the idle and made it much smoother when not under load, but putting the car in gear with the AC on will regularly reduce rpms to 700 or so and car frequently stalls out. Will immediately restart.

2. Also when engine rpms are going down and foot is off accelerator, at about 1100 rpms, nearly every time the engine will begin to shudder and begin to idle rough. Sometimes the idle smoothes out at 900 or so, but most of the time it just continues to idle rough under load until you get it up to 1200 rpms or so.

3. Also on cold start-up instead of running at 1100 rpms till it gets warmed up, it still runs at 900 rpm.

Clearing the 0442 code really makes the car worse for about an hour and then it seems to correct itself somewhat.

Clearing the code also clears the check engine light for about a week or two and then it comes back with the same 0442 code.

I have read on another forum that an evap leak will cause idle problems, as it lets in un-metered air.

The car is running very well otherwise. I sure would like to solve this problem. It is a pain.

Is it really the evap system or is it something else?
