I pulled mine out when the pump failed. Think of an analog clock (hands and minute ticks). The sending unit has an arm extending out to the float. But back at the sending unit where the arm is attached, there is a needle, and it moves across an ark of 'fingers', like the minute ticks of a clock. As the float moves up and down, the needle moves across the 'fingers' that make connections that signal the fuel level. As the 'fingers' wear out and break off, less precision potential can be achieved. If a 'finger' keeps the float from bobbing, there can be odd readings at the fuel gauge. Interestingly, the SID accurately continues to track fuel consumption and available range.
