As DE pointed out below, things like AWD (and turbos, for that matter!) add weight and complexity and can affect gas mileage. I, too, feel that AWD is not necessary - I got along just fine in winters with my 9-5. Most people do not need AWD in their everyday driving, and you can count me as one of those people. But you have to acknowledge that lots of people appreciate and are demanding AWD - I've seen a lot of those calls for AWD (and excitement about the 'X' versions of the 9-3 and 9-5) even on Saabnet!
So, the lack of turbo and presence of AWD were not considerations in my purchase. Both are *nice* things but do not constitute "make or break" features, in my opinion. If a car has those features, great - I'll enjoy them. If not, oh well.
We had much higher priorities with this purchase (space/cargo capacity, quality/reliability, easy of DIY work, had to be new or certified used), and on a budget of less than $30K, the Outback quickly became an easy decision for us.
Unfortunately there were no certified used 9-5 wagons within 650 miles of us, and even if a new 9-5 wagon would have fit in our <$30K budget, there weren't any in the Chicagoland area. With no Saabs available, I felt Subaru was the best alternative (also considered the Volvo XC70, Toyota Highlander, VW Passat wagon, and Audi A6 wagon). In the end I knew the ergonomics wouldn't be as nice in the Subaru, but the "anti-Honda/Nissan/Toyota" appeal which Aaron1 noted below felt very similar to the Saab's anti-Audi/BMW/MB feel - and I liked that. No doubt this feeling has factored in to many current/former Saab owners' purchases of Subarus.
Anyway, I know I probably didn't need to explain further, but there you go.
