Locked up thermostat would be one possibility.
Cooling fans that has stopped running could be another.
Sometime, but only sometime, can it be possible to drive the car emergency wise by putting on full heat inside the cabin and full blast on the blower motor as long as you still have coolant in the system and that the temp gauge doesn't get up in the red again.
But this is only an emergency solution to take you to a safe place.
