If the noise has gone, I would ignore it... it will likely stick again if you park the car for a while. While the starter may cause some minor damage to the flywheel gears, the starter will fail LONG before any major damage is done to the flywheel gears, the metal bits will fall harmlessly into the flywheel housing and if the problem is not a one time thing, you will need to replace the starter at some point in the future. Try not to drive with any grinding, if this occurs, exercise the starter a bit by doing some partial starts, then start the engine fully.
